Abstract painting with acrylics (with an emphasis on color and light) (In Person)

Learn how to create a captivating abstract composition with a focus on color and light! This class is designed for artists of all levels eager to explore different themes of abstraction, along with the techniques of adding light more effectively through careful distribution of color and values. Each week, we will start by examining some famous work by the masters, then, using acrylic paint as a medium, apply their techniques of bringing out light to your own abstract painting. With live demonstration, hands-on exercises, feedback, and encouragement by your peers, you will discover new possibilities and find the light along the way.

Dates:

Wednesdays, June 23rd, 30th, July 14th 21st, 28th, August 4th


Time:

6:00PM- 8:00PM


Materials:

Required: Acrylic Paint: Cadmium Yellow Medium, Yellow Oxide or Yellow Ochre, Quinacridone Magenta, Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue,Titanium White, Golden OPEN Acrylic Thinner or Golden Acrylic Glaze.

Canvases: (3) 12” x 12” and (3) 11” x 14” canvas boards or panels.

Brushes: a #4 and #10 round, a #6 flat or filbert, a 3/4” filbert, a 1” filbert, and whatever else you have.

Other: water jar; palette or paper palette; pencils


Teaching Artist Bio:

KAORI FUKUYAMA is a multi-disciplinary artist from Kumamoto, Japan, who currently lives and works in San Diego, California. Her practice spans paintings, drawings, sculptures, and site-specific installations that explore the interactions of color, light and shadow.


She works with a variety of materials including paint, ink, paper, textile, monofilament, acrylic, and resin in pursuit of a deeper understanding of our visual perception. Fukuyama was an Artist-In-Residence at Bread & Salt, San Diego in 2018, recently completed a large-scale public art installation in North Park (San Diego), and is a recipient of San Diego Art Prize 2020.


Her work is a part of private collections internationally and has been exhibited at multiple institutions including Oceanside Museum of Art, Laguna Art Museum, San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, San Diego Art Institute, The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, and William D.Cannon Art Gallery. Fukuyama enjoys teaching at The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library and UCSD Extension, and continues to expand her artistic boundaries.

Masks are required to be worn at all times.


If registering more than one student, please complete one form per student.

Class Terms & Conditions

Cancellation Policy:

There are no exceptions to the Class Withdrawal Policy. You may withdraw from a class up to 7 days prior to the beginning of the first class to receive a full refund. Six to one day prior you will receive a half refund. If you withdraw from the class with less than one day before the class start date no refunds will be given.


There is a minimum enrollment for all Lux programs. If this enrollment is not fulfilled, participants will be notified one week prior to the program start date and refunds or credits will be applied.


No Make Up-Dates:

There are no make up classes for missed lessons due to illness or scheduling conflicts.
